Communication and Language
INTENT
IMPLEMENTATION
At Leaping Frogs we have a language rich environment, where we will develop and hear every child's voice, through storytelling, song, conversation and imaginative role play.
From simple first words in our baby room, modelling words to gestures, offering simple language to help express their feelings or needs, encouraging early speech, singing songs with actions to help babies understand new speech and how to join in. Sharing stories and a love of books, learning words and sounds together.
We start to model language to promote thinking, asking open ended questions, providing a rich and varied narrative to role play and small world play. We encourage children to use their voice to express their feelings and to tell us what they want to play and challenge them to think of ideas and express themselves to staff and their peers.
We use sound bags and song bags to help promote speech and in our pre school rooms we introduce the jolly phonics songs and actions and the Mr tongue story, speech and language exercises. This helps develop their facial muscles to support clear speech.
We listen while others speak and encourage our friends to ask us questions and contribute their own ideas and suggestions and are taught to value and respect others.
- To be effective, skilful and independent communicators, who have a great understanding and can follow instructions and routines.
- To have excellent listening skills with a love of stories and books and a thirst for knowledge, with the ability to ask questions to further their learning and understanding of the world around them.
