Understanding the World
INTENT
IMPLEMENTATION
Children are encouraged to explore their physical world, inside, outside and beyond!
We encourage a sense of community and share each others experiences, increasing children's knowledge of the world around them.
We watch the seasons change as we explore the GREAT OUTDOORS, making use of magnifying glasses to spot our smaller friends in our meadow garden and learn about all our furry and feathered friends, from the visual boards and our lovely conversations we have about them, we love and care for them. We collect eggs from our free range chickens, incubating some and waiting for the baby chicks to hatch out! Our 'animal helpers' are always keen to help feed and clean the animals.
We watch things GROW from seeds to seedlings to plants and produce. We talk about what plants need to survive and enjoy filling our watering cans from the rain collected water butts. We take our produce to the kitchen and enjoy eating our home grown goodies for snack. We have lots of different food tasting sessions, where children are encouraged to help prepare and sample a variety of foods from around the world, such as Chinese noodles (with tricky chopsticks) and exotic fruit kebabs.
We explain and discuss everything we do, offering up new vocabulary, this is also achieved
sharing books which are diverse, showing different countries, cultures and communities.
- To be keen explorers with curiosity, appreciation and respect for living things.
- To have positive attitudes about the differences between people including race, religion and disability.
- To have a love for the outdoors and explore their natural environment, learning about wildlife, lifecycles and the changing seasons.
- To be active learners, learning about how to grow produce and flowers.
- To learn all about caring for our animals.
- Begin to have an understanding of their own life story and family history.
- To learn about different occupations and the wider world.

We promote
CULTURAL CAPITAL
by sharing our experiences in our home lives., we take turns to be VIP of the week, bringing in items and stories from home and even have visits from our family members and our pets! We arrange visits from community members such as the police, vets, nurses and firefighters.
We celebrate festivals of all cultures, drawing from video clips and visual references to help children experience a different way of life other than their own and learn about the wider world. We teach children how to greet each other in different languages and use role play to further understand different lifestyles.
We encourage children to be curious, to ask questions, we try to provide stimulating resources to create that special feeling of AWE and WONDER!

"Children communicate their understanding of the world with extreme confidence. For example, they talk about the pumpkins not being ready to eat until they have turned orange" OFSTED 2018
Children observe the world around them and know where their foods come from. We even grow our own!
